June Supper Club: Caribbean Themed

We recently enjoyed our last Supper Club gathering before our Summer Hiatus. We will resume again in September. But this month the theme was Caribbean hosted by Jason & Jodi.

(Sadly their last hosting of supper club as the time commitment has been a bit much for their social schedule...the club will miss them. G&I will definitely see them as usual.)

It was June so they were hoping to host outside on their beautiful patio on their huge yard.

But not shocking for us Washingtonians it was raining on this mid-June Saturday so we only admired their lovely outdoor space.

Being a foodie couple who loves to entertain outdoors as much as possible ourselves I know J & J were disappointed. Of course the party went on happily.

There's always a nice assortment of wines to get us started. Amongst the 12 of us we rarely have issue with finishing this off during the evening.

We had 3 different appetizers this month.

Plantain Chips with Warm Cilantro Dipping sauce and Peach Habanero Salsa
and
Chorizo with Crab Fritters
and
Caribbean Empanadas (which I am ashamed to say I got distracted and forgot to photograph..trust me they looked and tasted delicious. Sorry J & A.)

We enjoyed our appetizers

and catching up with everyone until our main course was ready.

Next Jason being the mixologist that he is;
 made a great cocktail to go with our dinner.

He made these = Caipirinhas which evidently is Brazil's national cocktail, made with cachaca (sugar cane rum),sugar and lime. Cachaça is Brazil's most common distilled alcoholic beverage. Both rum and cachaça are made from sugarcane derived products, most rum is made from molasses. They were very yummy but I was expecting more of a mojito taste but the cachaca gives it a very different flavor almost smoky. But they were a nice treat.

The table was set and we were ready for the main course.

Kobe beef skirt steak tacos

with some wonderful pineapple salsa.

Our side dishes were two different rice versions;
Caribbean Rice with peas

and  Caribbean sweet potatoes and black beans

The entire meal was fantastic. I was a huge fan of the sweet potatoes with black bean dish it had sausage and was wonderful.

We discussed summer vacation plans and J & A's wine trip soon to come. We assessed our wine consumption and noticed as usual we had pretty much consumed our lot for the night.

But then there was dessert;

And it was heavenly. Ice cream with a rum sauce, pineapple and toasted coconut. Another great night with phenomenal food and fantastic people. G & I look forward to seeing everyone in September.

(Recipes & step by step of the plantains & chorizo fritters coming soon.)
